PEACE

"I know it is incumbent on America, more than any other nation on earth, to lead in building the foundations for a stable and enduring peace, a peace built on the strength of our commitment to it, on the transformative ideals on which we were founded, on our ability to see around the corner of history, and on our courage and wisdom to make hard choices."

– John McCain, March 28, 2008

  • Today’s program will reflect John McCain’s vision of an America in pursuit of peace and seen as a beacon of goodwill and hope throughout the world.
  • Under a McCain administration, America will be safer and more secure.
  • John McCain understands – in a way that few others can fathom – the challenges that America faces in the world and the sacrifices needed to defend our freedom.
    • In his almost 30-year career of elected service, he has traveled the world extensively and met with numerous world leaders.
    • He has been to Iraq eight times and Afghanistan four times.
  • John McCain will modernize and enlarge the size of our armed forces and strengthen our relationships with key allies.
    • A member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, he has been a leading voice for policies and initiatives that give our men and women in uniform the resources they need to complete the mission.
  • Having been the leading advocate of the “surge” strategy for years and in the face of overwhelming criticism, John McCain has proven he is prepared to do what is needed to achieve victory in Iraq.
  • John McCain believes that radical Islamic extremism is the transcendent challenge of the 21st century – and he will defeat it.
    • He voted to authorize the president to use all necessary and appropriate force against terrorists and the nations that aid them.
    • John McCain voted for the Patriot Act, which has equipped law enforcement with the tools needed to combat terrorism here at home.
  • John McCain will ensure our men and women in uniform are properly equipped and adequately funded for the mission – and honored for their service.
    • John McCain voted for unrestricted funding to make sure our troops had the equipment and resources they need to win the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
  • As the only remaining superpower, America has an obligation to help the world’s most vulnerable citizens. A McCain administration will honor our commitments to Iraq and Afghanistan, help promote peace and eradicate disease in Africa, and participate in global trade talks to lower barriers and stabilize the global food supply.
    • As a former chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, John McCain has substantial experience with tough trade and global economic issues.
  • A McCain administration will promote religious freedom, combat human trafficking, and protect the rights of women and children.
  • A John McCain administration will strengthen our relationships with key allies and ensure we pursue foreign policies that put “Country First.” It will:
    • Achieve victory in Iraq
    • Prevent Iranian acquisition of nuclear weapons
    • Fund the military through the regular appropriations process, not through an “emergency supplemental”
    • Develop and deploy theater and national missile defense systems
    • Reform the defense procurement process
    • Support a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians
    • Reject unconditional presidential summits with dictators
    • Seek a relationship with China based on overlapping interests while standing up for our values
    • Strongly encourage the restoration of democratic institutions in Russia
    • Establish an Inter-Agency Task Force on Human Trafficking to increase cooperation and communication between all government agencies
  • John McCain is a proven leader with the experience needed to be a strong and effective commander-in-chief. He will secure the peace for future generations.
